Chapter Fifteen

Scarlett

My mom looked happy.

I didn’t exactly know what that meant.

But since she wasn’t a mean mom, and since I was pretty sure she didn’t want bad things to happen to me and Sam, I was guessing it hadn’t been a police officer on the phone.

I didn’t actually think we were going to be arrested anymore. I mean, if they’d wanted to take us into custody, they’d have done it last night. Right?

I wasn’t an expert, but on TV, they didn’t seem to let the crooks go home for a good night’s sleep and a blueberry muffin before they cuffed them and booked them. I mean, in the shows I saw some got to go home after a lawyer showed up. That was when things got really complicated and exciting.

I didn’t want my life to get complicated and exciting.

I was regretting running away.

I wished they’d just tell us what was going to happen already and get it over with.

“That was Robin,” my mom said.

My dad stopped talking to Jacinda and looked at my mom.

“She’s in Denver,” Mom said.

That got Jacinda’s attention too.

It got mine and Sam’s. We both liked Robin. She was a lot of fun.

“It seems I’m…uh…doing a remote cooking show from right here at Mountain Mystic Village,” Mom said.

“Here?” Dad asked.

“Here?” Jacinda asked, sounding a lot more upset than Dad. She looked at Dad. “How is this happening?”

“It’s a big place,” he said.

Jacinda’s eyes narrowed. “Where are you doing this little cooking show?”

“From the hotel,” Mom said. “Robin’s in Denver getting the food. I’m going to have to put some things together too.” She finished her coffee and set her cup down on the table.

“Can I come?” I asked.

I’d much rather help Mom than hang around here.

“Me too,” Sam said. “I can help you, Mom.”

Mom looked like she wanted to say yes.

I crossed my fingers.

She glanced at my dad, and her smile dipped a bit.

“You’re here for your dad,” she said. “I’m sure he needs your help.”

I couldn’t think what we were going to do all morning. The wedding wasn’t until five o’clock.

I turned to my dad. “I can get dressed really fast.”

“I can too,” Sam said.

My dad looked disappointed. He looked a little sad, but I wasn’t sure why.

“I’m not going to disrupt your plans,” Mom said.

Her voice was cheerful, but I could see she was faking it.

“This is your dad’s day. I’ll see you back home in a couple of days.”

“But—” Sam started to say.

“No buts,” Mom said in a voice that told me she meant it. “You be good at the wedding.”

She gave us a smile. Then she came over and gave each of us a hug.

“You have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow,” she whispered in my ear.

All of a sudden, I got sad again. I wanted to spend Christmas with my mom. And I didn’t want her to spend it alone.

“Where are you going to be?” I asked her.

“At Grandma’s house, like always. I’ll miss you, honey. But I’ll see you soon.”

I wanted to go to Grandma’s house for Christmas.
